Grading and Your Driveway or Farm Road: A Virginia Landowner’s Guide
10/2/2026
A solid gravel driveway gives you year-round access to your home, barns, and fields. But keeping it that way requires regular upkeep. Driveway grading reshapes a gravel surface so rain runs off instead of pooling in ruts and potholes. Most gravel driveways and farm roads need it once or twice a year. With a compact tractor and the right rear attachment, you can fill potholes, smooth out washboard, and rebuild the crown yourself.
Standing water breaks gravel down, but grading keeps the water off your driveway. When rain can’t drain, it soaks into the base and softens it. Every vehicle that passes presses those soft spots a little deeper, and soon you have ruts, potholes, and a washboard surface that rattles your truck.
The fix is shape. A good gravel road has a crown, which is a slightly raised center that sheds water to both sides. The Federal Highway Administration’s gravel roads manual recommends about half an inch of rise per foot of width, or roughly a 4 percent slope. Too little crown lets water sit, while too much can make vehicles drift toward the edge.
Regular grading pays off in a few ways:
For most driveways and farm lanes, a John Deere compact utility tractor with a rear grading attachment does the job. Add a front loader if you plan to haul in fresh gravel or clear out heavy debris.
John Deere’s 1, 2, 3, and 4 Series compact utility tractors all come with a three-point hitch for rear attachments. The right size depends on how much road you have and which tools you want to run, and our team can help you match the two.
Frontier attachments are built to pair with John Deere tractors. Here’s how the main grading tools compare.
Many landowners start with a box blade because it loosens, moves, and levels material in one tool. A land plane or rear blade makes a good second attachment for longer farm roads or ditch work.
Good grading comes down to timing, a loose surface, and a steady crown. Follow these steps for routine driveway and farm road maintenance.
Most gravel driveways need grading once or twice a year. Grade more often if you have heavy traffic, steep sections, or frequent washouts.
Aim for about half an inch of rise per foot of width from the edge to the center, which is roughly a 4 percent slope.
A box blade is the most versatile choice for most landowners because it can loosen, carry, and spread gravel. A land plane works well for smoothing and leveling long stretches of road.
